Sakura Medal Reading Program
Overview:
Launched in the fall of 2007, Canadian Academy’s Sakura Medal (formerly the Golden Falcon) Reading Program encourages students to read recently published literary works from around the globe. Each May, High School English Teachers from Japan-based International Schools meet to select twenty-five works that have been published over the past 18 months. The nominated books are ordered and placed in CA’s library. Students join the program by reading any of the books—and then reviewing the books on CA’s web page.
Program Rules for Students:
Joining the Sakura Medal Book Club: To join, students need to check out any Golden Falcon book from the library, read it, and post a comment on the school’s library site.
Attending the December Party: All students who have read at least one Sakura Medal book and made at least one posting are invited to attend the December Party. Details of the party will be announced in the HS bulletin.
Attending the April Party: All students who have read at least three Sakura Medal books and made at least five postings on the library’s site are invited to attend the April Party. Details will be announced in the HS bulletin. Students, who have made posts on five or more books, are eligible to vote for the Sakura Medal Book of the Year.
Awards Ceremony in May: Students who have read five or more books and made ten or more posts will be eligible for the Sakura Medal Award, presented at the High School awards assembly.
Postings: To earn the awards, students need to join the program’s library site to make postings about the books. Postings that are inappropriate because of offensive language or personal attacks will be deleted. If a student has two postings deleted, the student will be excluded from the Sakura Medal Program.
